UTURE RESTORATION PROJECTS

Arial View before restoration.
The Central Westcoast Forest Society partners with many different groups; the Thornton Creek Salmon Enhancement Society and the Tofino Salmon Enhancement Society to name two. The CWFS has worked at watershed restoration for many years (and others have tackled the challenge before). But there is more restoration work still waiting to be done in the Clayoquot Sound area.

The benefits of watershed restoration include (but are not limited to):

  • environmental protection and improvements
  • fostering a sense of ownership and stewardship
  • creating local partnerships
  • educational opportunities
  • recreational infrastructure (including fishing opportunities, picnic areas, hiking trails, increased eco-tourism, etc.)
  • contributing to economic diversification and development
  • generating local ability (both to manage projects and do the labour)
  • employment training
  • local economic spin-offs.

Kennedy Flats

The CWFS and its partners have been involved with restoration projects on the Kennedy Flats area between Ucluelet and Tofino since 1995. There is now a detailed report outlining the restoration efforts already completed and the work that remains to be done. The key to this effort is to acquire the necessary funding. The Kennedy Flats watershed is 12,937 hectares (or 129.4 square kilometres). The restoration plan for the Kennedy Flats is a comprehensive, holistic, and coordinated plan to restore both the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.
